Cactus Canyon softball team tryouts were Aug. 10-11. Thirty-six girls tried out, but, ultimately, only 18 spots were available on the team.
To make the cuts, Coach Dale Nagle and five other coaches were assessing the girls. They looked for attitude, ability, and sportsmanship. They ranked by numbers the girls with the highest numbers made the team.
Now that the team has been chosen, the team is preparing for its first game, which will be at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Apache Junction High School.
For the early part of the season, the Cougars are focusing on their ability to field the ball and get quick outs.
“We are working on catching the ball and throwing the ball,” said Coach Dale Nagle.
Coach Nagle said he is hopeful the team will win more games than last year.
Eighth grader Chasity Thurmond is looking forward to an exciting season and expecting the game to be a part of her long-term future.
“I hope to do good in softball and (eventually) get a scholarship,” Chastity said. “Softball is amazing and so much fun.”
