Cactus Canyon Junior High recently selected four new members to its Student Council. Seventh graders Abbigayle Davis, Sarah Rose Salvhus, Kylie Earl, and Haylee Eckhardt will begin their terms as representatives following fall break.
After having a council of only eighth graders for the first quarter, adviser Jason Davis said it was time select new members because seventh graders deserve to have a voice in dances, activities, and anything that the StuCo is planning to do in the future.
The delay in appointing new representatives was to give seventh-grade students time to adjust to junior high and allow recommending teachers time to be sure students were qualified.
After filling out an initial application, the four students were interviewed by Mr. Davis and the four StuCo officers.
“We did not doing true elections,” said Jason Davis, Student Council teacher. “After a student completed the application, we reviewed it to see if that person would make a good candidate. From there, conducted interviews and chose the students we felt would best represent StuCo and Cactus Canyon and work best with our eighth-grade members.”
Mr. Davis and the officers said they were looking for a specific type of candidate.
“Student council members must be willing to work hard, attend events before and after school, follow rules and show respect, and set an example for other students. Our officers wanted to be proactive and make sure we got people like that.”
Davis, Salvhus, Earl, and Eckhardt will officially join StuCo on Monday, Oct. 17.
