The CCJH softball team is off to a strong start this season with wins over Mountain Vista and a Hohokam in its first two games.
The Cougars scored 10 runs in the first inning against Mountain Vista Sept. 4 on their way to a 22-0 win. Breanna Conklin had a three-run double in the first inning and Brooklyn Ochoa had a two-run triple in the second to lead the way. CCJH pounded out 12 hits and all 18 players saw action in the game.
Ochoa, Brittany Gadberry, Alyssa Padilla, and Donae Preuhs all had two hits for the Cougars, while Lexi Raleigh, McKinley Kelley, Audry Powell, and Madison Kelly each had one.
Mikayla Gilgert, Mattie McMinn, and Kelley teamed up to pitch a one-hitter against the Wolverines.
Cactus Canyon traveled to Coolidge to earn a 13-2 win on Sept. 6, but the game was close for several innings before the Cougars exploded.
“It was a tight game for the first four innings,” said Coach Bill Wilson. “We lead 4-1 after four innings, but unloaded in the top of the fifth. We ran up nine runs on six hits and five walks.
Wilson said the big blow was Gadberry’s triple in the inning, one of her three hits on the day.
Powell had two hits in the game, while Preuhs, Gilgert, Ochoa, and Padilla all had one.
Gilgert pitched a complete game two-hitter and struck out 10 Bulldog batters.
The Cougars will travel to Maricopa to play Desert Wind on Tuesday.
