It’s that time again. Baseball season has begun at CCJH. The Cougars opened with a 9-8 victory over Mountain Vista followed by a 16-0 win over Hohokam.
The wins were no surprise to new coach Carlos Acosta.
The coach, Carlos Acosta, said, “I coach to win, and expect to win every time we hit the field.”
Preparation for the season began in August with many hours on the field working on fundamentals. About 40 athletes trying out for the sqad. Eighteen players made the team, but Acosta said making cuts is not easy because junior high players are so young.
“It was difficult to make cuts because I coach at the high school, and I don’t want them to give up hope,” said Acosta.
Acosta said the team leaders are Prescott Horn, Ian McIntyre, and Moises Rascon.
Last year, the Cougars team was very good and qualified for the playoffs before losing in the first round. The goal this year is to go even farther and win the league championship.
“I expect nothing less than winning,” said Acosta. “If we don’t win, we want the other team to remember how hard it is to beat us.”
